چکیده

Background: Physiological aging of the brain is accompanied by ubiquitous degeneration of neurons and oligodendrocytes [1]. An alteration of the cellular matrix of an organ impacts its macroscopic viscoelastic properties, which are characterized by mechanical parameters such as stiffness and internal friction. To date Magnetic Resonance Elastography (MRE) is the only non-invasive technique for measuring the shear viscoelastic properties of living brain [2-4]. Problem: Recently, it was demonstrated that stiffness of the adult brain is continuously decreasing with years of age [5]. However, MRE is based on the solution of the inverse problem of propagating shear waves which is mathematically ill-posed and thus error prone. Changing geometrical boundary conditions as given by brain atrophy in the course of aging may therefore confound MRE-derived elasticity parameters. Objective: In this study, the sensitivity of brain MRE to physiological aging and variations in brain volume was studied in 55 healthy volunteers ranging from 24 to 72 years of age. Aim of the study was to systematically investigate the influence of atrophy and geometrical boundary conditions in cerebral MRE.

Brain Volume Estimation Enhancement by Morphological Image Processing Tools

Background: Volume estimation of brain is important for many neurological applications. It is necessary in measuring brain growth and changes in brain in normal/abnormal patients. Thus, accurate brain volume measurement is very important. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the method of choice for volume quantification due to excellent levels of image resolution and between-tissue contrast. St...

Combined multi-spectral quantitative MRI and volumetry of the brain with the mixed-TSE pulse sequence and bisecting dual- clustering segmentation: a technique for studying regional ageing patterns in large populations

Introduction: Evolution of the brain during life can be divided in three time periods: a period of maturation characterized by increasing myelination and brain growth, an intermediate adulthood period characterized by relative stability, and an ageing period marked by ventricular enlargement, brain atrophy, and white matter (WM) and gray matter (GM) deterioration. Furthermore, these brain evolu...

Elderly patients have an altered gut-brain axis regardless of the presence of cirrhosis

Cognitive difficulties manifested by the growing elderly population with cirrhosis could be amnestic (memory-related) or non-amnestic (memory-unrelated). The underlying neuro-biological and gut-brain changes are unclear in this population. We aimed to define gut-brain axis alterations in elderly cirrhotics compared to non-cirrhotic individuals based on presence of cirrhosis and on neuropsycholo...

Decrease of brain stiffness compared to loss of brain volume in Multiple Sclerosis patients

Background: Chronic inflammatory diseases of the CNS such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS) lead to demyelinization and to widespread degradation of neurons and axons. The loss of neurons and axons alters the mechanical structure and therefore the elasticity of the brain, a process which may be useable for early recognition of diffuse pathological degeneration [1]. Problem: Current knowledge of biomec...

Generating the synthetic CT (sCT) and synthetic MR (sMR: sT1w/sT2w) images of the brain using atlas based method

Introduction: Radiation therapy planning (RTP) is one of the clinical applications in which both CT scan and MRI are used. MR and CT images are applied to determine the target volume and calculation of dose distribution, respectively. In addition, using two imaging modalities increases the department workload and cost. In this study, an algorithm was presented to create synthet...
